Highlights of St Hilarion
St Hilarion castle was originally a monastery and named after the monk who chose it as his hermitage. In the 11th century the Byzantines began to fortify the building and the castle, along with Buffavento and Kantara Castles defended the island against raiding Arab pirates. The castle buildings climb up the mountain side with the Royal home at the top, churches in the middle and soldiers and servants at the lower levels.
The castle is very well preserved and offers outstanding views of the Kyrenia coastline. During the winter when the mists roll in off the mountains, the castle takes on a particularly spooky atmosphere and it often receives a light dusting of snow during winter storms.
St Hilarion is 104 km from Ayia Napa and it takes around an hour and 40 minutes to get there.
