PR JOBS IN AYIA NAPA
|
|
Most new workers in Ayia Napa will start off as a PR. This job mainly involves standing outside a bar or club and persuading people on the street that they should come in for drinks. Pretty much every bar has at least a couple of PR’s with some taking 10 or more people on at peak season. There is generally a high turnover of PR’s in Ayia Napa so unless you’re really good, you’re very expendable with dozens of people asking every night for jobs during May and June so you can’t slack off or someone will replace you fast. Some PR’s are paid each night, some weekly or monthly, some also get bonuses for bringing in a certain number of people. Sometimes PR’s will be required to go out in the daytime handing out flyers. A less demanding and more fun type of PR job is the club PR who works during the hours before the club opens. These PR’s walk the streets of Ayia Napa as a team promoting the club by dancing, handing out flyers, visiting bars etc. Most PR’s don’t get nights off, it’s a 7 days a week job. Drinks are generally included but usually with a limit on how many you can have per night so that you are not drunk at work. Most PR’s will finish by around 1.30am so working hours can be shorter than other jobs.
Skills required – You’ll need lots of chat, you must be persuasive and friendly and able to talk to anyone. A good PR is often also a flirt, an extrovert, sometimes even annoying and a bit of a show off, but that’s often what makes the most successful (and best paid) PR’s. You must be thick skinned as you will get a lot of rejection; some people just don’t want to be stopped in the street or spoken to. You may even get verbally abused, groped or used as a leaning post for the very drunk. You must look good to get a job in the first place, and you have to attract people’s attention and make them want to talk to you. Personal hygiene and taking care over your appearance are essential but most employers will also only want the sexiest and most flirtatious people representing their bar or club.
How to apply – Some venues will recruit pre-season online. If they do take on-line applications it will say on their Facebook page or website. If it does not say they are recruiting then you should apply in person to the manager or owner once you arrive in Ayia Napa. They will want to get a look at you to see if you fit the image of their bar / club and will also need to see if you have the sort of personality they’re looking for. You may need to work a free trial to prove yourself, one night should be enough. Be wary of bars who ask for a week’s free trial; some bars get away with not paying for staff all summer this way. Never apply for a job when you are drunk or when the bar is at its busiest. Some bar owners are put off by people who apply as a group or with friends, they often only want independent staff who can speak for themselves. Between 8pm and 10pm is when you’re most likely to find owners and managers available. Some venues will take PR’s as early as April, most start to take them in May. In June thousands of people arrive looking for work so competition can be fiercest then. In August many workers go home so you can usually take your pick of jobs if you come for the later part of the season.
In the last couples year, the Ayia Napa municipality has vowed to remove PR’s from the streets and to stop bars and clubs employing people to hand out flyers. As yet we don’t know what effect this may have on the 2016 summer season and the job opportunities that will be available.
