Tour Description
Experience the culture and history of Northern Cyprus with this tour to the ancient port city of Famagusta and the North-East coast of Cyprus.
The tour takes you to the monastery of Saint Barnabas who was martyred in 52AD. He founded the Cypriot Orthodox church and his tomb is located here as well as an icon museum.
The next stop is the ancient city kingdom of Salamis which was founded by Teucer following the Trojan war. The archaeological site contains the remains of the city - bathhouses, gymnasium, an amphitheatre and other buildings with marble columns.
Continuing on to Famagusta old town you have the opportunity to explore at your leisure. Walk the immense Venetian stone walls, Visit Othello Castle or wander the streets of the old town lined with shops, cafes and traditional architecture. There are over 300 churches, chapels and historic sites in Famagusta city including the Gothic masterpiece of Saint Nicholas Cathedral.
As we leave the city we stop at the beautiful golden beach which marks a stark contrast to the ghost town of Varosha which you can view from the beach. Once one of the most popular holiday resorts in Europe, the town was abandoned in 1974 after the Turkish invasion.
