Tours and Excursions to Apostolos Andreas from Ayia Napa
Apostolos Andreas is a monastery located in the far north-eastern point of Cyprus. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, the history of the monastery dates back to when a ship carrying Saint Andrew to the Holy Land went off course and hit the rocks. Andrew struck the rocks with his staff and a spring appeared which is said to have healing powers. The Monastery has since been a place of pilgrimage and it was once known as the Lourdes of Cyprus.
In the 12th century, a fortified monastery stood at the site and it was here that Richard the Lionhart received his surrender of Isaac Comnenus. In the 15th century a small chapel was built on the shore and the main monastery church was added in the 18th century. The main buildings are relatively recent, dating back to the 19th century. In recent years the monastery has fallen into a state of disrepair but since the opening of crossing points into the North, pilgrims and visited and resumed coming to the monastery and UN funding is in place to restore the site.
