Tours and Excursions to Kantara Castle from Ayia Napa
Kantara Castle is located in Northern Cyprus, around 550 metres above sea level. It's exact age is unknown although it is thought to be from the Byzantine era. Perched on the top of steep granite crags, Kantara is one of a trio of strategically built castles (Buffavento and St Hilarion being the other two) built high in the Pendadaktylos mountains. These protective fortifications had views of the routes to and from the major cities of Famagusta, Kyrenia and Nicosia as well as along the Northern Coastline and the Karpas Peninsula.
The castles fell into disuse in the early 1500's when the Venetians came to power on the island. Apart from the removal of upper floors, Kantara is remarkably well preserved and is a fascinating site to explore with many original features remaining. The breathtaking views from every angle of the castle are also noteworthy.
