Tours and Excursions to Kykkos Monastery from Ayia Napa
Dating from the 11th century the Holy monastery of the Virgin of Kykkos was founded by the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos. The original monastery was burnt down many times but was rebuilt on the same site into the impressive building that we see today. The Monastery is famously wealthy and many of its chapels are adorned with gold. The holy site has collected many famous relics and icons over the years including the only remaining icon painted by the apostle Luke.
The first president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios began his career as a Monk here in 1926 and he is buried 3 km west of here at Throni. Kykkos remains a popular place to visit for both tourists and locals and the site has grown into a complete tourist destination with shops and cafe's.
